Money For Nothing

It’s customary to expect them to actually work there, though. This week Nottingham Prison has come under fire for keeping a local man on the payroll for a year, despite him never having worked a single day there. In December 2016 a pub worker accepted a job at the Category B men’s prison but deferred his start date when his wife became ill. At the end of the month he received a payment equal to two weeks’ wages, and throughout 2017 he received monthly payments of between £1200 and £1600.

By the time his wife had recovered the man, whose identity is being kept secret, had changed his mind about the move. It’s difficult to blame him. As novel as it may be to receive thousands of pounds you haven’t earned, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in an employer to see them making the same glaring mistake over and over again. And anyone sympathising with the Sherwood-based prison should know that the man they kept paying had no intention of robbing from the rich. He emailed the prison repeatedly, offering evidence that he didn’t work for them and asking them to cease the payments.

Payroll mistakes aren’t usually this howling but any instance of underpayment, overpayment or mis-payment is a cause for concern. Staff morale and collective confidence can be fragile and when employers lose the trust of their people, job performances can slip sharply downhill.

The answer? There’s no substitute for attention to detail. There’s no substitute for HMRC accreditation, scalability for any number of users, unlimited pension scheme definitions, payroll runs of any frequency and customisable reports for any requirement.

There’s no substitute for a Jane System.

One Giant Leap

And we did. The 2017 Azzure IT Customer Day used technology as a starting point for a day of discussion that gave attendees an insight not only into advances in key Microsoft products but into the innovative thinking that moves industries and economies forward.

Craig Such set the tone for the day with a reminder that technology and box-checking for their own sake benefit no one.

The select group of partners and customers in attendance were updated on Microsoft Dynamics 365, with a big-picture view of the ways these smart applications will add value. Game-changing GDPR legislation was discussed not as a threat to business but as an opportunity to build trust with employees and customers by respecting their right to data privacy. Every seminar followed the same theme.

How can we add value to your business?

The setting for this event, the National Space Centre in Leicester, was an appropriate one. If we want, we can coldly break down space travel into a series of technical developments. In July 1969 an aerodynamically efficient object was launched from a site in Texas and eight and a half days later it landed in the North Pacific Ocean. But that’s not quite as inspiring as “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” is it?

Thank you to everyone involved with the organisation of this excellent event. If you want to know more about Azzure’s thriving partnership with Microsoft and their commitment to making this technology work for your benefit, contact them today.

Game Changers

Premier League footballers and clubs are easy targets for criticism. Many are accused of being detached from their communities, but there are times when players and clubs reach out with inspiring results.

This week Arsenal FC launched a startup innovation lab, working in partnership with local businesses to create positive experiences for fans and develop projects that will showcase technical talent. The ten-week programme will see young entrepreneurs mentored by senior business managers from the club and given the opportunity to demonstrate their products and services, with the possibility of investment in the most promising ideas.

The reality is that, like Arsenal and England’s other 91 professional league clubs, startups are under pressure to get results every week. The invoice that doesn’t get paid, the terms and conditions that don’t get signed or the employee who doesn’t turn up for work can make a game-changing difference to a small company’s prospects. Initiatives such as Arsenal’s are a massive help, and there are straightforward steps every organisation can take to protect itself.

The HR software that builds inclusiveness into your recruitment procedures and delivers seamless onboarding for new starters.

The payroll software that ensures every member of staff is paid accurately and on time, whether they’re part time or full time, paid weekly or monthly.

The integrated system that encourages individuals and departments to work together, motivates employees to improve performance and frees up management time.

Jane Systems is partner of choice to public and private sector clients who value innovation and performance. These clients range from “premier league” market leaders to smaller companies finding their way in a highly competitive world. Each organisation has its own priorities, but they all want precision and functionality in their HR and payroll […]

Deadline Day

This is a time of year when football fans debate the success or failure of their team’s dealings in the close-season transfer window. With a week to go Premier League clubs had spent a record £1.17bn on players, according to business analysts Deloitte. The final week of last year’s window saw £300 million change hands, so when the dust settles on Friday morning we could be looking at an overall Premier League summer shopping spree approaching £1.5 billion.

At midnight tomorrow the window closes. Does a looming deadline instill focus and controlled urgency, or just overwhelm us with blind panic?

So are you a panic buyer or are you an investor?

Your business is growing. What started out as a handful of people is now a major employer with staff paid weekly and monthly depending on you to get things right.

Nothing is worth the professional embarrassment of cutting corners with a HR and payroll system only for your employees to be affected by mistake after mistake. Premier League footballers may have enough in the bank to cover a payroll error, but most of us don’t have that luxury. Most of us need our salary and pension figures calculated accurately and our mortgages paid. What are your options?

How about a cost-effective payroll software service that’s fully HMRC accredited, continuously adds new features tailored to your needs and delivers personalised training and ongoing support?

How about a payroll system that’s scalable to accommodate one employee or tens of thousands, and agile enough to give you swift validation of bank account numbers and sort codes so no one gets missed out on payday.

How about pension management you can count on, with expert handling of any number of pension scheme definitions? […]

Nobody’s Fault, Somebody’s Responsibility

Sometimes the quirks of a different language can give us a fresh take on our problems.

In Portugal, the phrase “to feed the donkey sponge cake” (alimentar um burro a pão-de-ló) refers to an elaborate treatment being given to a person who doesn’t need it.

In Finland, “to let a frog out of your mouth” (päästää sammakko suusta) is to say something inappropriate, a pitfall that we’re all familiar with.

In Poland, “not my circus, not my monkeys” (nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy) is an inventive way of telling someone “this is your problem, not mine.”

And that brings us to an important point about service providers; their definition of service.

At Jane Systems we understand the challenges faced by the education sector, and we don’t like to see the hard work of students and teachers go unrewarded. This week’s news that IT systems problems have delayed the degree results of students at Blackburn College’s University Centre is painful. At a time when they should be striding forward into the job market, 800 young people are standing still. We haven’t worked with Blackburn College but we do know they have a hard-earned reputation for professionalism and commitment to their students. We also know that systems problems are sometimes nobody’s fault. But that doesn’t make their impact any less challenging.

The Jane Self-Service Portal has transformed the working lives of education sector clients by giving each individual responsibility for maintaining their own HR record, while management retain oversight and control. It’s efficient and inclusive, and by sharing responsibility it gives people ownership of their career development. You’ll notice that the word “responsibility” keeps coming up here. We like that word. We believe taking responsibility makes all of us better […]

Karaoke

The backing music begins to play, and the tune is reassuringly familiar. The performer moves smoothly and confidently to the microphone and begins to sing. Except that you wouldn’t really call it singing. He misses the first note, and the second, and the confidence evaporates. Now he’s nibbling frantically at each lyric like a gerbil eating its way out of a cardboard box.

Suddenly you notice everything else that’s wrong. His shirt doesn’t fit, and he’s wearing a wig. Not just any wig, but a wig that looks as if it was gradually collected from a shower drain. This is not a virtuoso performance.
Welcome to the world of karaoke.

When we hear a familiar introduction we want to believe the song will please us. But unless the singer has talent, things can turn ugly. How many times have you heard someone singing along and barely been able to recognise the song?

Note to karaoke enthusiasts: it’s not enough just to regurgitate lyrics.

What do we mean by Karaoke Software?
At first glance it seems to offer what you need, and it may well carry a price tag that you associate with quality. But scratch the surface and what do you find?

– An inflexible system that can’t be adapted to your changing needs
– Unhelpful formatting that adds layers of difficulty to routine tasks
– Key functions buried in multiple menus with hierarchies that make sense to no one but the programmer

Note to software providers: it’s not enough just to churn out code without reference to client priorities.
Do better. Try harder to deliver functionality that makes working lives easier and more satisfying.

Do what Jane Systems does.

It simplifies the complex and enables cooperation. You might say it brings colleagues and departments […]
